Our Beautiful Saints are raised in our country home with our children. They are forever part of our family.

The Saint Bernard should have a pleasant, outgoing temperament.
They make excellent pets for children and are usually very protective of their owners and property. However, there are variations in temperament ,which should be considered when choosing your Saint Bernard.
A large aggressive dog of any type can be extremely dangerous animal, Keep in mind that the breed's first assignment back in ancient times was to guard the hospice, and therefore it will become quite defensive and protective if challanged or threatened. Your  Saint or {future Saint} should be completely trustworthy with the family, but should be ready to protect itself and its family in times of danger.
I myself have had Saint Bernards for A Lil' over 12 years, each & everyone of my sweet Saints  I have owned through the years have all been the sweetest, calmest, most gentle Saints, I have ever seen. I would be lost without my Sweet Saints. I would not dedicate my time & life to improving any other breed.

Is the Saint Bernard the right breed for you??
The St. Bernard is a fascinating noble breed. He is a lovable, affectionate companion that is extremely loyal & devoted to his owners & family. However, you should be aware of the pro & cons associated with acquiring any breed~not just this one. You should understand the responsibilities associated with making this serious commitment & appreciate that you will be spending the next 10 or more years with the dog you choose. St, Bernards are ideal pets but DO require a substantial amount of space.
They are massive dogs & require enough room to stretch their bulky legs & enormous frame.  Therefore they don't make good candidates for small apartments & will undoubtedly be more comfortable in a larger home that has the space for them to roam freely.

       ~Characteristics of the amazing Saint
Bernard~

*
Personality
Saint Bernards are great biggg lovable beasts. They are called the "gentle giants" of the dog world-a title they have earned.  Saints are known for their loyalty & dedication. They are wonderful companion dogs. All they really want out of life is to be with the people they love. Saints can tolerate a home in a cold climate, but  never a home with a cold heart. They are first & foremost people dogs. They do not do well if they are neglected or ignored. Nor do they do well if they are loved during their puppyhood & ignored as an adult.
The perfect dog for many people,Saints fulfil the "Big Dog' requirement people often have. Patient & good natured, theycan be wonderful with children, especially those who are taught to respect animals. These dogs are loyal to friends & protective of family members. An adorable puppy, A boisterous funny adolescent, & finally, A rather laid -back, mature adult. Saints are a  'multi-purpose'  dog.
Two very important elements to remember about Sweet Saints are that they want to be around people & they are working dogs. They are always eager to please you. If you are part of an active family, the Sweet Saint will be ready & willing to participate & if you are more accustomed to lying around the house & relaxing  he will adjust to that lifestyle as well. For such a large-sized dog, A Saint will do remarkably well in a small yard or even a larger type townhouse. But to maintain physical & mental well-being & to develop socialization skills, your Saint should be given moderate excercise throughout his/her adult life. They are splendid dogs to take on walks.  A socialized Saint Bernard is a pleasure to live withor to meet. Every owner must provide his /her dog with ample opportunities to learn how to behave in social situations. Saints, like all dogs, are better at chewing up etiquette books than reading them.....
Nothing pleases a Sweet Saint more than receiving undivided attention from the people he/she loves. Don't expect a dog to go amuse him / herself in the backyard. Play with your dog or teach him something.
Sweet Saints are working dogs, they like to be actively engaged in a project-preferrably with you.
If you are not the type to enjoy having a sidekick, DO NOT get a Saint.
They like to be part of almost any activity, like sitting down near you while fixing dinner or leaning against you while you are outside or watching t.v.
If you are quietly sitting in a chair, don't be suprised if your rather large dog decides to lie on your feet. How better to know where you are & when you might get up & leave...Ha!

* Temperment

Many of the problems that owners have with dogs of all temperments stem from how much time their dogs spend alone.  There has been press coverage about 'Latch -key kids" & the stay -at-home-alone lifeof workingdog is not much better. Saints thrive when you involve them in regular family activities. For example, going on daily walks together or playing with your dog outside is preferable to just sending him in the yard to " do his own thing" Dogs are pack animals & since most puppies are taken away from the pack at an early age, they have no idea what "doing their own thing" is digging holes, snatching neighbors things & barking incessantly are often signs of boredom.
A dog that is taught basic obediance commands or even simple tricks is a much more content animal. 15 TO 30 minutes of one-on-one work twice a day will help your dog become a well adjusted companion. A dog that is worked a little each day is far less likely to get into mischief the rest of the day. Is this because they aretired, fulfilled, or just thinking about their heavy work schedule while they are idle?
Whatever it is, the time you spend bonding with your dog is time well spent. You will find that it is a small price to pay for having a truely wonderful pet.

IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE THAT YOU WILL ENJOY A LONG-TERM (TEN YEARS OR HOPEFULLY MORE) COMMITMENT LIVING WITH & CARING FOR A DOG,
PLEASE, DO NOT PURCHASE A SAINT BERNARD!!!!!

**House Breaking**

:0)  Housebreaking is required training for all puppies & even some older dogs who come in to new homes.

There are many experience-based rules for the housebreaking owner to follow, including the use of a restricted area & close supervision.

If approached  thoughtfully & intelligently, housebreaking should proceed smoothly to it's completion.
